Local News May 19, 2023 Legislation to increase safety on trains operating in Pennsylvania was introduced by state Rep. Lou Schmitt, R-Altoona, in an effort to avert a hazardous ecological and economic man-made disaster as seen with the train derailment in Ohio. In a news release announcing House Bill 1126 and House Bill 1127, Schmitt said, 'There is a glaring need for stricter freight rail safety standards.' The rail industry is primarily regulated at the federal level, but Schmitt said he wants to address the issue of freight rail safety by requiring freight trains to be operated by two people in the cab of the locomotive.
